When a child is born, care and protection should never be optional. While this is a non-negotiable in modern society, history tells a very different story.
In this episode of my mini documentary series, we explore the true story of Victor of Aveyron, also known as the wild child. Born in France around 1788, Victor was abandoned by his parents and survived alone in the forest for years before being discovered at the age of twelve.
Victor was later taken in by Jean-Marc-Gaspard Itard, a physician and educator who believed—against common assumptions of the time—that children with special needs were capable of learning. Itard developed a specialised curriculum tailored to Victor’s abilities, making this one of the earliest recorded cases of special education.

Despite Itard’s efforts, Victor was unable to acquire full language skills, having missed the critical developmental window. His story reminds us that when supporting children—especially those with special needs—we must meet them where they are, rather than forcing comparisons or unrealistic expectations.
Every child develops differently. A child who struggles with show-and-tell is no less worthy than one who speaks confidently in front of others.
